Sports massage emphasizes the prevention and healing of sports injuries. It was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance.
Generally, there are four types of sports massages:
Restorative: given during training to allow athletes function better and sustain less injury during intensive training.
Pre-Event: a short, stimulating massage given no less than 20 minutes before the event, to prepare the muscles, joints and tendons that will be involved in the exertion.
Post-Event: a relaxing massage given 1 to 2 hours after the event, to normalize the body condition.
Rehabilitative: a therapeutic massage aimed to alleviate pain due to injuries.
Sports massage especially benefits those who are suffering from tendon pulls, muscle strains, knots in underlying tissues, frozen shoulders and all kinds of chronic pain.
